Having noticed that one our Partridges had a dozen or so chicks following her on the road between Brook House and Foxhill Manor, I raced off to fetch camera’s, etc to get some footage. When I came back and had had a couple of attempts at photographing and filming them I heard a lot of tweating behind me and realised five of the chicks had fallen down a drain cover. With the help of Paul from Foxhill Manor we managed to get all five out of the drain and back to mum. They were all together when we left them but we will be keeping a closer eye than usual and covering any large gaps to prevent this occuring again.

Possibly more exiting in the long run I caught a glimpse of two Red Kites over the estate today. This is the first time I have seen them though I have been told they are there. I doubted myself to the extent that I have been listening to their calls on the web to confirm that they were indeed Kites.

We have been playing with our new trail camera, kindly lent to us by Scott Country (scottcountry.co.uk). Over the last couple of days we have been trying to get some photographs of some of the deer but they have been a little fast for us and all we have had was a shot of a bottom or a leg. Last night we left the camera just off the entrance rd and have got a few better pictures.

Have been unable to update the diary all week but here is what we have seen.

The Damselflies are in full swing around all our ponds and lakes, we have the common red and the common blue from what we can tell. There has been a fair bit of mating going on. Discovered the Green Damselfly in the picture is simply the female version of the Common Blue.

The tadpoles are starting to grow their back legs and look more froglike, and we came across what we believe is a yellow dung fly.

Picton house bird feeder has been enormously busy with the Woodpecker making many trips to and fro throughout the day. Not to mention another, very entertaining, visitor.

The Blue Tits nesting in the wall of Springfield House continue to thrive, here is some footage of the mother returning to feed her young and the glimpse of a wing as the chick grabs it’s meal.

Found a small spider by Hill House, love his huge eyes! Apparently this is a Jumping Spider.

01/06 Young deer standing in Foxhill car park 7am

02/06 Cockchafer beetle (May Bug) on wall by side door of Manor (A Big Beastie!)

03/06 Very large fox just calmly ambling about on terrace at back of Foxhill Manor at 8:30.

“Biggest grass snake in the world scared the pants off me whilst walking down path at the side of Springfield House!” – unknown author wrote in Nature Diary

Spotted the usual buzzard flying alone over foxhill manor, he is recognisable from the feathers missing from his left wing. He has been here a few years and often seen on a branch by the reservoir shed in the early morning.

Our family of buzzards are also back, they were seen over the fields by foxhill cottages, there are five of them at present.

Foxhill Manor

In 1970 Foxhill Manor, half a mile and some 500 feet down the hill and over the county boundary into Gloucestershire, came onto the market.

Group 4 bought it to extend the Head Office accommodation. Foxhill, originally called Furze Hill, had been built as a private residence in 1909 in a style influenced by the arts and crafts movement. It stood in 100 acres.   From 1937 it became the family home of Henry Maudslay DFC who died in the Dambusters Raid. Foxhill Manor is now offices.
